Our Mission

Unlike large stock insurance companies owned by shareholders, American Mutual is completely owned by its policy holders. We don’t distribute profits to corporate shareholders and our Board of Directors are policy holders just like you, so you can be assured that every decision made has your best interest in mind. At American Mutual our surplus is carefully reinvested to help cover losses for our policy holders in the future. Also by keeping our overhead costs low, we are able to pass those savings on to you.

In addition to our own longevity and financial strength, we are backed by Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company. Grinnell Mutual has held the financial strength 'A' rating from A.M. Best since 1991. Grinnell has provided over a century of service to Iowa and surrounding states and is the largest farm mutual reinsurer in North America. At American Mutual Insurance we are proud of our history of helping our neighbors and we look forward to serving you and your family, just as we have for generations.

Our History

Since our inception in 1878, American Mutual Insurance Association has had the goal of providing a great insurance product at a fair price to people in East/Central Iowa. Even as technology changes the way we operate, what hasn’t changed is our commitment to being the local insurance company that is there for our neighbors in their time of need.

When you choose American Mutual Insurance you will have the benefit of working with a local independent agent near you. Our agents specialize in the insurance needs of Iowa farmers and homeowners and have a complete line of products to meet all of your needs. American Mutual’s home office is located in Grand Mound, Iowa just 5 miles west of DeWitt.
